National health and social care charity Making Space has held its third annual Colleague Awards, with trophies for 12 winners.

The event is held to recognise and pay tribute to the individuals and teams amongst the charity’s 1,000 nationwide employees who inspire others, go above and beyond expectations and make a real difference to the lives of the people supported by the charity.

This year, a new category was added to the awards in memory of former IT worker Jordan Carrington, who sadly passed away suddenly. Jordan’s mum Jennifer Eves presented the inaugural Jordan Carrington Kind Hearted Award to 20-year-old Faith Oliver, a recovery worker with the Making Space Open Door mental health crisis support team, based in Stockport, Greater Manchester.

Faith, who is also a long-term carer for family members, was described as “inspirational” and with “amazing levels of empathy and awareness of people’s needs” by the judges.

Other winners on the night were:

Nichola Sutton, who was named Wellbeing Hero for her dedicated support of tenants at Harpers Green Supported Housing in Warrington, Cheshire.

Sherry Chinoy, who took home the Volunteer of the Year award for her work with the dementia support groups at Sandalwood Day Centre in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

Head office IT worker Jack Palfreyman, who was named Newcomer of the Year after being nominated by four of his colleagues.

Karen Toole, a support worker at Rosemary Court’s supported housing in Darlington, County Durham, who was named Learner of the Year for embracing IT skills.

Cheshire West Carer Support team member Gilbert Martin, who took home the Community Integration award for his work with hard-to-reach communities and male carers.

Regional care recruiter Ria Lyon, based at the charity’s Warrington, Cheshire head office, who was given the Behind the Scenes Award for her dedication to reaching new team members with the Making Space values.

Chloe Cadman, service manager at Cheshire Supported Living, who was named this year’s Inspiring Leader for her dedication to the tenants and team at supported living services in Northwich.

The support team at residential care service Palmyra, Merseyside, which was named Team of the Year for its commitment to quality.

Aisha Ali and Natasha Malik from the Calderdale Carers Wellbeing Service, West Yorkshire, were named joint winners of the trophy for Diversity & Inclusion, while the whole team at Calderdale walked away with the Co-Production award.

The Outstanding Contribution Award was given to Sana Shazad for her work with the Open Door mental health crisis support team in Stockport, Greater Manchester and the Talking Therapies service in Wigan (Greater Manchester) and Warrington (Cheshire).

The ceremony, which was held at Manchester’s The Edwardian Hotel and included a three-course lunch and a motivational interactive session by Kat Thorne, also recognised learners and colleagues with long service.

Certificates were handed out to 50 learners, with 68 colleagues receiving accolades for dedicating at least ten years to the charity and the people they support. The awards were made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of local and national businesses across the country.

Phil Orton is the chief people officer at Making Space. He said: “We couldn’t be prouder of our winners, finalists and everyone who took the time to nominate colleagues.

“Each and every member of our Making Space team is an inspiration, which is why we embrace the opportunity to recognise and value their incredible work and take pride in the positive.”
